How do I handle FDM models?

Terrain, buildings, scenery, and vehicles are typically printed in FDM (Fused Deposition Materials). FDM prints more slowly, but is rigid and strong, and FDM printers typically have large build surfaces. The traditionally thought if 3d printer is an FDM printer.

Each model has been examined for support and string removal. However, some minor stringing or support material may have been overlooked. This can be easily removed with a needle nosed pliers, or a hobby knife. PLA drills and cuts just like regular plastic, although it is harder than polystyrene plastics.

PLA, PLA+, and PLA Pro plastics are produced from plant based sources, are non-toxic, and biodegradable within 80-100 years. Not intended for outdoor use, or food use. Models are sensitive to heat and flame.

FDM Care Instructions:

  • Your new FDM models do not need curing. They are ready to prime, although you may want to wash them first to ensure the primer adheres well.
  • Assemble models with CA super glue - plastic glue will not adhere.
  • FDM is strong, but can break if dropped or bent. Breaks can be glued.
  • If you plan on kit bashing, use a fine hobby saw, rather than cutters or blades. FDM is harder than normal plastic.
  • We print in high resolution for fine quality but thin layer lines and small defects from support removal are normal. You can trim or fill these with modeling filler.
  • Keep your models away from heat sources like space heaters, which will deform or melt the plastic.

How do I handle Resin models?

Miniatures, monsters, small terrain, bases, and small models are typically printed on SLA (Stereolithography Apparatus) printers using a resin material. A build plate is lowered into UV sensitive resin, which cures in a series of layers, forming the model.

We clean and finish each miniature by hand. However, there may be some small imperfections such as where the support material has been removed or left behind. Some easy finishing may be required.

Resin miniatures are fully cured and non-toxic.

Resin Care Instructions:

  • Your new miniatures are cleaned and cured. No special washing or preparation is required other than priming.
  • Assemble miniatures with CA super glue - plastic glue will not adhere.
  • 3d resin is brittle. Take care when handling. Do not stress thin parts like swords.
  • 3d resin doesn’t react the same as plastics and shatters rather than cuts. If you plan on kit bashing, use a fine hobby saw, rather than cutters or blades.
  • We print in high resolution for fine quality but thin layer lines and small defects from support removal are normal. You can trim or fill these with modeling filler.
  • Do not leave your miniature in the sun. Excessive UV light will cause layer separation and deform the mini.
